With the peak tourist season upon us, Port Douglas is prepared for the blitz of visitors.
Some visitors in the area will be on a budget and besides the two ‘must do’ activities in the region, being a visit to the oldest living rainforest in the world – The Daintree Rainforest and a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, they will be looking for a few ‘free’ things to occupy themselves and family while here in holidays.
As locals in the area with over 20 years experience, we’ve gathered a few of the genuine free of charge activities for you and your family to enjoy.
These are in no particular order:
Sunday Market – From 8am every Sunday morning at Market Park, near Anzac Park – browse the many stalls that offer fresh produce and locally made arts and crafts, jewellery and clothing.
Picnic at Rex Meal Park – in the afternoon and watch the boats come back from the Reef. The park is located next to Anzac Park near the Police Station, a children’s play area is also available.
Walk Four Mile Beach – It is not exactly four miles long but close. On a windy day head towards the south of Four Mile Beach where you can spend some time under the shade of the coconut trees and watch the kite surfers put on a wonderful and colourful display.
Take a walk to Flagstaff Hill Lookout – for panoramic views of the coastline and out to the Coral Sea
Visit the Sunset Markets – every Wednesday from 2 to 7pm at the Port Douglas Marina, browse the stalls, listen to some local buskers and you can follow on with
Sailing at the Yacht Club – on Wednesday afternoon. Previously known as WAGS (Wednesday afternoon gentlemen sailing), now also known as WAGLS (Wednesday afternoon Gentlemen and Ladies Sailing) minimum age for participants is 18. This is a free sail. Arrive at The Yacht Club by 4.00pm sign in and a skipper will personally ask you to join their team on their private yacht for a sail.
Take a historic walk around Port Douglas – Start at The Old Court House located near the Police Station where you can obtain information about some of the historic landmarks.
Take a walk into town via Mowbray Street and see the Flying Fox colony – Bring your camera. The evening fly-out is a spectacular sight, especially during the breeding season, when the camp size is at its greatest.
Have a car and you’re energetic? – Then take a hike. Literally! Drive yourself to Mowbray, about 5 minutes from the highway and you’ll reach The Bump Track. The track is 6 kilometres long, mainly on a steep incline and a moderate level of fitness is required.
